Devendra Banhart and the Grogs

Devendra Banhart- Baby by stndrdeviations

I know you've all been wondering... who is going to open for The Strokes as MSG on Friday???!?? Well, the answer is: Devendra Banhart and the Grogs

After doing a little research I dug up a few Devendra Banhart songs, which I love. But I was not able to listen to any true Devendra Banhart "AND THE GROGS" aside from some videos of a live show they played in Toronto. Furthermore, Devendra Banhart is really hot so it did not surprise me when I found out he dated Natalie Portman! They broke up in 2008.

The Strokes

Am I really seeing my favorite band on Friday? I think I am going to do a series of posts about this STARTING NOW.

FILTER Five: Our Top 5 Songs By The Strokes

"In honor of The Strokes' first album in five years, Angles—released yesterday—we at the FILTER HQ took a look back through the band's discography to revisit our favorite individual songs across their catalog and compile a list of our top Strokes offerings from 2001 to the present. The jury's still in deliberation on Angles, but if our polled results below are any signifier, The Strokes' debut LP, Is This It, has already become a landmark of the new millennium."

""Reptilia" from Room on Fire (2003)
Why: It's so simple but sounds so challenging, with its multi-guitar parts and blazing solo, plus Julian's indifferent howls... that the wait's not over and pleas to not slow him down. When everything drops out and the guitar comes in with that lead that sticks to you like duct tape on paper, it gets you amped. Classic Strokes; in some ways, they've never topped it."

In the sun, sun having fun
It's in my blood
I just can't help it
Don't want you here right now
Let me go

Leavin' just in time
Stay there for a while
Rolling in the ocean
Trying to catch her eye
Work hard and say it's easy
Do it just to please me
Tomorrow will be different
So I'll pretend I'm leaving

NY Times: Tools for Thinking

Photobucket

"A few months ago, Steven Pinker of Harvard asked a smart question: What scientific concept would improve everybody’s cognitive toolkit?

The good folks at Edge.org organized a symposium, and 164 thinkers contributed suggestions. John McWhorter, a linguist at Columbia University, wrote that people should be more aware of path dependence. This refers to the notion that often “something that seems normal or inevitable today began with a choice that made sense at a particular time in the past, but survived despite the eclipse of the justification for that choice.”

For instance, typewriters used to jam if people typed too fast, so the manufacturers designed a keyboard that would slow typists. We no longer have typewriters, but we are stuck with the letter arrangements of the qwerty keyboard..."

Guerilla Marketing

The Escape Machine:

Escape Machines - Surprise from The Cool Hunter on Vimeo.

"DDB Paris created this simple, fun “Escape Machine” experience for the French travel company Voyages SNCF.

Menacing, glowing black cubes wait till someone goes close enough. Then the cube asks where the person would like to travel. Pushing the red button produces a crazy celebration, complete with gigantic walking kisses, and provides the wishers large, customized mock tickets to their destination. Watching the faces of the onlookers is just as much fun as the experience itself!

The underlying message is that the company’s Escape service lets you travel to any destination you want. DDB Paris with executive creative director Alexandre Harve created this, as it did last year’s flash-mob “Welcome Service” scenes for Voyages SNCF." - Tuija Seipell

Photo Film

Today I've come across a few interesting properties in the photo world, which is really awesome because I love coming across a photographer/blogger that inspires me. Keep rockin' Mike Piscitelli!!

Insight 2011 Campaign from MIKE PISCITELLI on Vimeo.

"Spawned from the San Fernando Valley, Mike Piscitelli dropped out of ninth grade to pursue skateboarding, hardcore music and teenage girls. He ended up working as an assistant on porn films, which spurred his interest in photography and film. At age eighteen he moved to New York and proceeded to shoot editorials for Dazed & Confused, Another and i-D magazine." -Vimeo
